This annual full-day class is a must-attend for anyone who has responsibility for HR and personnel management in their township.
Session One—And Then This Happened: The Year in Review
This session focuses on developments in labor and employment law over the past year. We will discuss the #MeToo movement as well as modifications to laws regarding the Fair Labor Standards Act, Title VII discrimination, medical marijuana and changes in leave laws. Given the pace of change in 2019 so far, an hour may not be sufficient time to cover all of the developments in this fluid area of the law.
Session Two—Work Rules: What They Mean and How They Exist.
Employee performance and accountability start with rules and policies to which employees are held responsible. Where are the sources of these rules and policies? Why are they necessary? How are they enforced? And how will they help you manage?
Session Three—Workplace Investigations: Keeping You and Your Municipality Protected
The goal of this session is to identify when you need to investigate claims of bad behavior or bad performance. In an era of #MeToo and where everyone seems to have a lawyer, how does a municipality protect itself? We will outline concrete steps you can take to create the best record and the best defense against claims.
Session Four—All Time is Relative: Understanding How the Fair Labor Standards Act Works.
Timekeeping and compensation are the fundamental building blocks of any workplace. There have been significant changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act in 2019 and this lecture will be focused on the frequent traps employers find themselves in when they deal with compensation issues and timekeeping issues. We will discuss what the Department of Labor will look for in an audit, how to handle the basics of overtime and compensatory time and how to properly record time to avoid issues.
Session Five—What All New Managers and Supervisors Need to Know.
Transitioning to management or managing employees is a skill learned over time. In this session, we will talk about what a new manager or supervisor needs to know at a minimum. We will discuss 1) setting the tone; 2) appropriate communications; 3) delegation and accountability; 4) permission to fail; and 5 how to evaluate good manager performance.
This class is eligible for 5 PMGA Administration points and 5 SHRM credits. In addition, the class is eligible for 5 CLE credits (additional fee of $15 per credit).

For classes, refunds for a cancellation sent to us between 10 and 2 business days before the class you are registered for will be subject to a $20 processing fee. Those who cancel within two business days of the class you are registered for, or do not attend, forfeit the full registration fee which, if unpaid, will be invoiced.
